October 10, 2018: All Nations

Future of Secondary Education?

Khan Academy, founded by Sal Khan, who holds three degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard,  seems to me to be an incredible new company setting the pace for online education. I expect this team will be a large part of the solution to soaring costs, and associated student debt, of traditional brick and mortar institutions with luxurious student housing.

Below is a helpful 15 minute Khan Academy video presenting an unbiased and respectful view of St. Paul and the early church. The lecturer is using some inexpensive exhibits and a pleasant voice to tell the story just as told in the New Testament. He covers most of the subjects we discussed Wednesday morning including circumcision, Gentiles, and Galatia.

You can check out the Khan Academy website here. You may find some courses to take, “For free. For everyone. Forever.”

All Nations

Part of our Wednesday morning discussion focused on the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob being a blessing to “all nations,” a theme running through Sacred Scripture. Here are pertinent quotes from the Old and New Testaments containing the phrase “all nations,” or, in the first case, “communities.”

The Patriarchs

To Abraham: Genesis 12:2-3  “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. All the communities of the earth shall find blessing in you.”

To Isaac:  Genesis 26:4  I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and give them all these lands, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing—

To Jacob: Genesis 28:14 These shall be as plentiful as the dust of the earth, and through them you shall spread out east and west, north and south. In you and your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing.

The Kings (Solomon only)

1 Kings 5:14 Men came to hear Solomon’s wisdom from all nations, sent by all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.

 The Prophets

Isaiah 2:2 In days to come, The mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established as the highest mountain and raised above the hills. All nations shall stream toward it;
Isaiah 14:9 The nether world below is all astir preparing for your coming; It awakens the shades to greet you, all the leaders of the earth; It has the kings of all nations rise from their thrones.
Jeremiah 3:17 At that time they will call Jerusalem the LORD’S throne; there all nations will be gathered together to honor the name of the LORD at Jerusalem, and they will walk no longer in their hardhearted wickedness.
Jeremiah 27:7 All nations shall serve him and his son and his grandson, until the time of his land, too, shall come. Then it in turn shall serve great nations and mighty kings.
Zechariah 12:9 On that day I will seek the destruction of all nations that come against Jerusalem.
Malachi 3:12 Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land, says the LORD of hosts.

The Psalmist

Psalm 72:11 May all kings bow before him, all nations serve him.
Psalm 113:4 High above all nations is the LORD; above the heavens God’s glory.

The Evangelists

Matthew 24:9, 14 Then they will hand you over to persecution, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name….And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.
Matthew 28:19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, (The Great Commission)
Mark 13:10 But the gospel must first be preached to all nations.

St. Paul (Last verse of Epistle to Romans)

Romans 16:25-27  Now to him who can strengthen you, according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages  but now manifested through the prophetic writings and, according to the command of the eternal God, made known to all nations to bring about the obedience of faith, to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ be glory forever and ever. Amen.)

May 16, 2018 – Pentecost, Holy Spirit, and Change

There is a pretty common joke in Lutheran circles that goes something like this:

Question: How many Lutherans does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: CHANGE! WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT CHANGE?

Given Father Linsky’s opening comments, maybe the joke can ring a bell with Catholics also. Maybe with all human organizations. I suppose it is only human to get into ruts and have trouble thinking of new ways to approach our responsibilities. After all, we are created in the image of an unchangeable God.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Malachi 3:6-7 –  For I, the Lord, do not change, and you, sons of Jacob, do not cease to be. Since the days of your ancestors you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them.

1 Peter 1:24-25 –  “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the field; the grass withers, and the flower wilts; but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

So, God IS, the great I AM, unchanging and perfect, His Word remaining forever, and we, in our imperfections, with weak excuses for resisting improvement, wither and fade and wilt and turn aside from the commandments. So, we need to change, and The Holy Spirit inspires us to do so and will help us do so.

So, knowing that inspiration comes from The Holy Spirit, we can pray:

ACTIONES NOSTRAS

Father,
may everything we do
begin with your inspiration
and continue with your saving help
Let our work always find its origin in you
And through you reach completion.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

And we may find new and better ways to serve even as the Apostles and Disciples were changed at Pentecost by the Holy Spirit.

Here is a quick summary from The Catechism of things the Holy Spirit does and doesn’t do:

The Holy Spirit

  • comprehends the thoughts of God
  • reveals God
  • makes known to us Christ, his Word, his living Utterance
  • does not speak of himself
  • makes us hear the Father’s Word, not hear the Spirit himself
  • reveals the Word to us and disposes us to welcome him in faith
  • “unveils” Christ
  • will not speak on his own.”8Such properly divine self-effacement explains why
  • “the world cannot receive (him), because it neither sees him nor knows him,” while those who believe in Christ know the Spirit because he dwells with them.9
  • The Church is the place where we know the Holy Spirit:
    – in the Scriptures he inspired;
    – in the Tradition, to which the Church Fathers are always timely witnesses;
    – in the Church’s Magisterium, which he assists;
    – in the sacramental liturgy, through its words and symbols, in which the Holy Spirit puts us into communion with Christ;
    – in prayer, wherein he intercedes for us;
    – in the charisms and ministries by which the Church is built up;
    – in the signs of apostolic and missionary life;
    – in the witness of saints through whom he manifests his holiness and continues the work of salvation.

You can read it all straight from the Catechism at the Vatican Website HERE.

In the New Testament, NAB Version, the phrase Holy Spirit shows up 89 times, almost half of those in Acts. (I am surprised holy is not capitalized like Spirit). He was/is busy. Here they all are. Here are a chart showing the locations of the 89 instances and all the verses.

We also talked about these OT/NT connections in Sacred Scripture, the Holy Spirit as Wind.

So, shall we listen and be open to change?

March 7th – Fulfillment of Law and Prophets

The Law and the Prophets

Just for a bit of background, here is a short blurb from The Catholic Study Bible, Reading Guide, Page 4, about the Law and the Prophets as currently understood by Bible scholars.

Words of Jesus about Law, Prophets, and Greatness

Matthew 5:17-19 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.  Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.  Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 18:1-4 At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.  Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”  37 He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.  38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.  39 The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  40 The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Disciples Argue About Greatness Twice in Luke and Get Schooled

Luke 9:46-48 An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest.  Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”

Luke 22:24-26 Then an argument broke out among them about which of them should be regarded as the greatest.  He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them and those in authority over them are addressed as ‘Benefactors’; but among you it shall not be so. Rather, let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant.

Jesus on Deeper Meanings of Some Commandments (Law)

Matthew 5:21-48 You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.’  But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa,’ will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.  Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.  Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.  Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna.  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.

It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce.’  But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

“Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow.’  But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.  Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black.  Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.

You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’  But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on (your) right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.  If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well.  Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you,  that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.  For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same?  And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same?

So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.

But, No Command in OT to Hate Enemies

Proverbs 25:21-22 If your enemy be hungry, give him food to eat, if he be thirsty, give him to drink; For live coals you will heap on his head, and the LORD will vindicate you.

Exodus 23:4-5 “When you come upon your enemy’s ox or ass going astray, see to it that it is returned to him.  When you notice the ass of one who hates you lying prostrate under its burden, by no means desert him; help him, rather, to raise it up.

And Finally

If all the above is not perfectly clear, just chalk it up to Divine Mystery and take comfort in the words of G. K. Chesterton in Orthodoxy, Chapter II, The Maniac: The whole secret of mysticism is this: that man can understand everything by the help of what he does not understand.
